Conquering The Post-Holiday Doldrums ♥
September 15, 2009

Upon the completion of a mindblowingly fabulous vacation, the reality of returning home can suddenly fill us with a sense of sheer terror: your previously favoured haunts can seem utterly stale, and the need to whip off and experience more travelling can be intense! So! How do you cure a case of the dreaded post-holiday blues, and alleviate symptoms of a serious case of the 'travel bug'? Read on!

x Ease Back Into A Routine.

If you're considering a swift return to the workplace/study after completing your interstate/overseas adventures, STOP! No, no, no! It's important to allow yourself transition time, so ensure that you dedicate at least three days off for this before returning to your regular routine, and give yourself permission to unwind, sleep and adjust!

x Re-Discover Your City.

If you've fallen slightly out of love with your city, it's time to restore the passion by exploring new terrain: venture into the opposite side of town, shop in a completely different suburb or play tourist by visiting the very best landmarks, restaurants and beaches your city has to offer!

x Get A Culture Fix.

Listen to Brazilian music as you clean the house, throw together a delicious pasta meal in a nod to Italian dining or learn to speak German!

x Plan Your Next Trip!

Although it may sound like an obvious solution, planning your next vacation is one of the best, and most exciting, ways to cope with post-holiday blues. Not only will it fill you with anticipation, but it will help to keep you motivated, inspired and energised, too!

x Live As Though You're On A Permanent Holiday!

After completing my Contiki tour of Europe in December/January, I was feeling enormously out of sorts. I'd just had the most magical experience of my life, and all I could think upon arriving home was ''argh, I wish I was still there!'' I sort of didn't know what to do with myself for the first few days, and it was extremely confusing. But after immense contemplation, I realised how much of a fantastic opportunity it was to use my holiday as not only an extraordinary memory, but also, as a catalyst for change, and as an opportunity to create more magic in my own life! What do I mean by this? Well, during a vacation, I think that we automatically have a heightened sense of adventure, and an increased desire for fun.. we think ''ah, I'm on holiday, so I'm going to do whatever I want! I'm going to do EVERYTHING, and have the time of my life!'' It's an amazing feeling, but then I realised.. why can't we live with this mentality ALL THE TIME? Why can't this be our daily attitude? Why not go bowling on a Monday night, dancing on a Tuesday and bungee jumping on a Friday? Don't wait for a travel expedition to explore everything you've always wanted to try; seize the moment NOW, and live as though you're on a permanent holiday!

Have you ever experienced post-holiday blues, or itchy traveller's feet? Do tell!
