Who Are Your Top 5 Personal Style Icons? ♥

in I Want... Style!
4 Aug 2009  |  13 Comments

If you were to name your top five style icons, who would you list? Who helps you to get dressed every morning? Is it your best friend? Kate Moss? Or the girl on your bus who you'd secretly love to run up to and exclaim how much you love her shoes/bag/hair/jeans?

Here are a few of my personal favourites (in no particular order!): they've all stylistically inspired me to some extent, and are my ULTIMATE sartorial muses!

1. Carrie Bradshaw

From the very first moment Sex & The City's Carrie Bradshaw spilled onto television screens, clad in a vintage tutu and sporting magnificently wild curls, I was head over heels in LOVE. Adventurous, one-of-a-kind and completely marvellous, Carrie's outfits served as an important reminder for women to celebrate their wardrobes, and to have fun with what they wore!

Her style was often contradictory (masculine style one day, jazz flapper girl the next!), and dismissive of the notion of a set of hardcore fashion 'rules' - stripes and polka-dots together? A belt worn over an exposed midriff? A decadent fur coat at a baseball game? Sequins for no reason? Of course! In Carrie's world, anything went - worn spectacularly, and always with confidence!

2. Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen

Renowned for their sharp tailoring, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen continually fascinate me with their ability to team great basics (think oversized shirts, leggings and long cardigans) with punchy accessories - the result? A striking, truly one-of-a-kind style. Their love affair with bold footwear has promptly sparked my own obsession, and their seemingly effortless approach to dressing has encouraged me to experiment with my own aesthetic.

3. Gala Darling

How would I describe Gala Darling's style in a sentence? Why, '''the epitome of fabulousness'', of course! Intrinsically unique, with candy-coloured hair and lashings of charm, Gala's outfits are always an explosion of magic - she's like a sparkly fairytale character! There are many reasons why I love Gala (um, she's a fellow Wellington-born, Atmosphere loving, cupcake-crazy Virgo like myself, for starters!), but what I truly applaud is her relentless enthusiasm for dressing up, and her refusal to succumb to the mundane - every piece she dresses herself in is always more exquisite than the last, and definitely inspires me to undertake a similar method to styling and shopping! Quite simply, she's a walking wonder - and it's a route worth following, I promise!

4. Nicole Richie

Whether she's sporting boho-goddess waves and a maxi-dress, or mod-tastic monochrome and an army of stripes, Nicole's outfits are always remarkably accessorised, and notoriously glamorous! A fan of heavily-stacked bangles, Chanel handbags and multiple pairs of sunglasses, Nicole has perfectly mastered the art of casual dressing.

5. Nubby Twiglet

And finally... what would a 'Style Icon' list be without graphic designer/blogging extraordinaire Nubby Twiglet?! Although Nubby's style is very different from my own (try as I might, skinny jeans will never

be my friend!), I really admire the way that Nubby knows what pieces suit her, and how she consistently remains true to her personal style. Her outfit combinations are nothing short of awe-inspiring, and I'm sure that the word 'immaculate' was created especially in anticipation of her arrival on the style scene!

Kez has a very good point. Sometimes you just have style icons that inspire your overall look, but when you feel the need to portray how you feel externally maybe those icons don't work and you find inspiration elsewhere.

I think that's when places like LOOKBOOK.nu and wardrobe_remix come into play you just find so many different styles and perspectives, it's very easy to feel inspired.

I don't have any set icons! Different people inspire me all the time. I think I'm more inspired when I see a piece or a style that just resonates with who I am.

I love browsing through fashion stores or magazines and building my own style based on what flatters me.

Some people who inspire me one day might not the next. I'm so fickle and I have to dress to match my mood or the outfit doesn't work that day!

Bee - It's very possible! If you read 'Miss Corrine' (my previous website), you may have already seen it - I first published this in 2008 :) (But it was a lot of fun to write and sparked an interesting conversation, so I thought I'd drag it out of my files and re-post it!)
