It's a reality often dismissed by family, teachers, career advisors and even friends, but truthfully, for some of us, the pinnacle of employment bliss can't be achieved through a 9-5 business lifestyle, or feverishly climbing up the career ladder to become a high-flying executive! What provides one person with excitement, fulfilment and lashings of satisfaction may leave another lunging themselves out of the window in a screaming fit at the sheer mention of the word 'photocopier'.
So! What are the alternatives for the corporate-resisting individual who believes that an office cubicle involves wading into a daily cesspool of mediocrity and gloom?
Why not consider:
x Becoming an au-pair? Last year, my very own sister joined the nanny-ing set and wound up working for a fantastic family in New Zealand, while more recently, a lovely lass in my Media & Communications class departed the course to do the exact same thing, but in Italy! (And has since made a plethora of us envious with her endless photostreams of Milan terraces and pristine beaches, as well as Facebook status updates about Italian men!) If you've ever spent the day wishing you could find a paid way to travel the world, this may be the perfect occupation - it's a role that typically involves little to no previous working experience, a slew of possible countries to work in, rent-free accomodation and a sizable weekly income. x Creating an online emporium? Ideal for more than just vintage Chanel, Ebay provides users with a unique opportunity to generate a virtual marketplace in which they can sell everything from whitegoods to jewellery, 24 hours a day! x Asking for a position in your favourite museum/book/pet/clothing store? x Providing musical lessons? Even if your skills aren't that of a virtuoso, announce tutoring on your local community noticeboard to budding rockstars at a beginner level! x Developing a love of exercise into an outdoor personal training business? x Starting a weekend market stall? x Offering your services/skills? Do you excell with make-up? Possess a unique flair for styling? Advertise the secrets of your trade in a newspaper or an online business directory! x Working at a beach-side cafe`? x Becoming a travel consultant, or Contiki Tour Manager?

Sometimes I think that I secretly want to be an Island child, and moved to some beautiful, tropical destination in order to give up my straight-laced and far to ambitious life to smoke pot and write poems on the beach... Alas, I'm just not that cool. I guess I'll stay in grad school and go on lecturing people about the dangers of smoking anything. :)

I've worked in an office for my entire working life (brief stint working in Hospo while I studied). It has it's moments..
Nanny sounds so fabulous! What I do enjoy about office work is the regular pay, leaving at 4.59 to live my life starting at 8.29 which leaves me time for breakfast in bed with my boyfriend. It does bore me to death at times but it's only 8 hours of my day. I think I can handle it :D I couldn't handle a pay cut. If anything ever went terribly wrong with my boyfriend I PRAY TO GOD NOOO but worse case senario. I'd seriously consider nannying or teaching english overseas, cruise ship work or something different. I am incredibly happy with my life outside of work that I don't mind then 8.30 - 5. For now....

I'm actually terrified about being in an office from 9 to 5. I got so many job offers (apparently EVERYONE needs a computer geek n hand) but I turned them down because of the hours, the fact that I had to be chained to a cubicle and the idea of not having natural sunlight nearby made me crazy.
This reminded me of the fact that you don't have to work for a big old corporation to make a living and what better way to make a living than to do what you love right?

Fab suggestions, lady! Teaching English in another country is a great way to explore the world and yourself, too ...

awesome post! i could never do 9-5 in an office either.
there are a zillion jobs out there that have nothing to do with office work; anything to do with being outdoors or artistic :)

I have an unconventional career suggestion for you, Corrine!
TAFE Teaching.
No qualifications or brain needed! As demonstrated by one BUUURRRR.
(If any of our other teachers happen to be reading this, you were all fantastic.. there was just one letting the team down!)

A. - Hahahahahahaha, the lucky little thing! :) I'm so proud of her, and thank-you as always for your enormously sweet comment, Alex!
Stacey - YOU'RE awesome! <3 Thank-you, and I admit, I have to agree - while I see no problem working in an office in a position/environment that really thrills you, the idea of working in one just for the sake of paying bills absolutely fills me with despair.. it's hardly the stuff dreams were made of, is it? Especially when there are so many alternative opportunities out there..
If anyone else has a suggestion for an unconventional career, I'd love to hear it! :)

Aww, this post is so great! Working a boring old 9-5 job just isn't for everyone - I know it's not for me! And these are great ideas for anyone looking for an alternative occupation. You're awesome. <3

Aw, lovely little post Corrine :)
I commented Em today actually, She must be hating living in an exotic country, in a mansion, having everything paid for, taking holidays and being paid on top of that! Ha ha. It would be glorious.
