As we witness the heartbreaking devastation in Japan at the moment, it would seem enormously insensitive (and utterly trivial) to bounce around and exclaim ''HEY GUYS, it's Friday! Weekend, weekend, weekend! Party, party, party! Oblivious, oblivious, OBLIVIOUS!'' today. There's every chance that you couldn't give a flying FRENCH FRY about that delectable mug of chai tea I inhaled earlier in the week, and justifiably so: in comparison to current world events, such a revelation is about as important as mittens are to moths. (Hint: they're absolutely not.)
Instead, may I fling a variety of Suggestions For The Week Ahead your glorious way, and ask that you send your love in the direction of the Asia Pacific? Japan, we've never met before, but I've heard that you're one heck of a (beautiful) character. We're all thinking of you and wishing you an EXTREMELY speedy recovery. Please, get well soon!
x Throw yourself COMPLETELY out of your comfort zone. Go on! Frolic outside of your safety net! Swap your beloved barbecue sauce for a divine-looking relish. Order the opposite item on a menu. Speak the truth when you'd usually blush. Book a deep sea diving adventure. Spin a globe and plan a holiday in the location your finger rests on. Read a biography instead of Cosmopolitan. Watch a Parisian film. Mingle with somebody who's definitely not your ''type''. L-I-V-E!
x Commit to improving your health in even the teensiest of ways. WALK. Take that darn iron supplement. Add some baby spinach to your stir-fry. Guzzle a litre of water each day. Stretch! (Seriously! I'm presently nursing a muscle spasm preventing me from extending or straightening my right arm, all of which can prooobably be attributed to a lack of stretching in between working and moving around, so for the love of limbs, PLEASE stretch!)

Might I add another? While everyone has decided to panic about how the radiation will affect ME and buying up iodine pills (maybe that's only hear in Utah that people got so crazy?), now is a great time to actually make yourself prepared for emergencies. Do you have a 72-hour kit? Do you have a good supply of water on hand? Do you have a good supply of vitamins? Do you have flashlights and candles in your house? Do you have a meeting place for your loved ones? All good things to prepare for, in a rational, calm, strategic way.

great post! i agree, it's so trivial the things we worry about on a daily basis when there are much bigger and devastating events going on in other countries, it really gives you a new and appreciative perspective on life!

You're so right! I feel weird posting throughout everything that is going on, but I can't help myself. I definitely don't want to come off as oblivious! It's so easy for people to forget about what's going on halfway across the world, you know?

Oh my gosh, poor Japan! I've been avoiding the news because it makes me cry (and I'm a big wuss). As soon as pay day rolls around I'm going to send a good portion of my meagre funds their way, for sure. Those poor people.
On a happier note, I'm totally down with improving your health. I've been running on the treadmill, and doing yoga, and stuffing my face with fruit instead of junk. I'm starting to get muscles back in places that I forgot people are meant to have muscles. Why hello Abs, long time no see!

I've donated to both, and now I can't wait to get back to school so that we can start planning a fundraiser to help both New Zealand and Japan.

I saw the tsunami live, I was awake at the time and watching the news. It was devastating.
I just heard back from my frie.d who lives there but I'm still worried about the nuclear alerts.
I have a huge test in two hours and it doesn't seem as important, and it really is important as it determines my future. I'm sure Japan will bounce back, the Japanese are like that.

Joanne Faith - You poor thing, I can't even IMAGINE what that must feel like for New Zealanders right now, even though I'm originally from New Zealand myself :( (I moved to Australia 11 years ago). I've donated to both countries and if that helps to aid their recovery even slightly, then I'm a happy girl, but I 110% wish that I could do more.

The events in Japan have been truly shocking, although can't help but feel in a socially awkward situation as we still need to care for our own back yard here in New Zealand...
