Okay, so I'm definitely not suggesting that now is an excellent time to stock up on several hundred cans of spray paint (no, no, no!) and scribble and scrawl your way across streets, houses and buildings in a frantic doodling frenzy, but imagine if the more typical black and white blurs of initials, nicknames and unimaginative expletives erratically squiggled across your city each day were replaced with inspiring quotes, images and thought-provoking sentences instead?
Why can't grafitti be used as a tool to create something beautiful?

It can!

even graffitit thats just a signature or 'tag' has its beauty. it is an expression of freedom, of emotion, of a desire to be free from the confines of society.

They're fabulous examples of great, inspiring grafitti! I love finding little hidden messages of hope or thoughts written on walls, fences and even toilet doors. The world would indeed be a happier place!
Hope you're well hun! xx

Some street art is so inspiring! I photographed it pretty compulsively when I was in Barcelona, and there is a LOT, but this fits in with this post; http://www.flickr.com/photos/speculummundi/4659967838/in/set-72157623417531609/

Street art is such an awesome way for people to get their words out there! I compulsively photographed it when I was in Barcelona, there's so much! This; http://www.flickr.com/photos/speculummundi/4659967838/in/set-72157623417531609/ fits in nicely with what you've got here. Some of it is so inspiring. xx

Honestly street art really is an art, I've seen incredible things everywhere and it's part of urban culture etc. The problem comes when people graffitti their "signature" or random things all over the place, be it office windows, lamp posts or bus stops. That I find horrible!

Just saw the Banksy movie this weekend and was reminded how much I adore street art.

I agree with you! Inspiring quotes would be so much better!
Where I live there is a group of people that once in a while stick poetries (printed on paper) onto bins, streetlights and such...
My favourite one is written on three steps (that take you from a small street to a square) it says "Stairs are walls with hiccups".
I love it so much!!!

I'm not sure if this is classed as graffiti cause I'm pretty sure it was written in chalk, but on the railing along the pedestrian path of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, someone had written 'You have a choice'.
Obviously it was written because people have committed suicide off the bridge before. But yeah, I saw it last time I walked across and I thought it was sweet :)

You know what? There's a huge difference between urban art and graffiti - urban art is wicked awesome!!! I love it. It's inspiring and a lot of young people are able to rehabilitate themselves from troubled graffiti offenders and become awesome artists. I love the programs that help that process.
