For the majority of us, December 25 is marked on the calendar as one of the most special days of the year: a magical event practically EXPLODING with family, laughter, presents and an abundance of the greatest, most mouthwatering, lavish and utterly sensational food ever!
But unfortunately, this situation isn't an accurate representation of everyone's Christmas, and for some, it can be one of the loneliest and heartbreaking events of the year. It may be due to financial stress, or caused by the absence of actually having somebody to share it with at all, but whatever the reason, we can all strive to spread joy and ensure the likelihood of Christmas being enjoyed by as many people as possible! Here's how:
x Volunteer at a soup kitchen, hostel or church, and spend your morning distributing an army of delicious treats to the homeless. The elation that you experience as you witness a sea of gratitude-saturated smiles and hope will be FAR superior to that of opening gifts. x Fill your handbag with an assortment of random ornaments, and attach them to inanimate objects throughout your street or city. (A mirrored bauble hung from a tree? Carol lyrics glued to a wall? A stocking taped to a lamppost containing an assortment of treats?) x Visit a retirement village and hand out miniature Christmas puddings or chocolates. x Have your best friend's parents flown overseas for a much needed sabbatical? Is your co-worker's daughter unable to be with her on the almighty day of days? Invite one of your friends/acquaintances/colleagues without any concrete plans to join in on your Christmas celebrations. ''The more the merrier!'' is an old adage, but one that will ALWAYS ring true! x Buy a present for a child in need. In Australia, my favourite resource for this is the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal, a system which encourages people to place gifts under a giant Wishing Tree (located inside Kmart stores), which are then donated to a variety of charities to pass onto less-fortunate families. It's a simple concept, but one that has the potential to make a huge difference: it really is incredibly heartwarming to select an amazing doll or truck set and know that it will be unwrapped by someone in a gleeful frenzy and happily played with! x Bake (or, if you have the unique tendency to burn almost every culinary creation that you attempt to produce like I do, buy!) Christmas cookies and share them with your neighbours.

How are you spending YOUR Christmas? What other tasks could we complete to ensure that someone else's December 25 experience is every bit as exceptional and memorable as ours?

I usually put gifts under the Kmart Wishing Tree, and I'm really sad that I can't afford to do that this year. :(
But I am heading around to my Aunt's house for a family gathering tonight. Then, my boyfriend and I are spending tomorrow drinking cheap scotch, cooking bacon & eggs, and watching Christmas movies before heading off for another family dinner. It's a pretty great Christmas to me, even if we couldn't afford to "celebrate" that much.

Very thoughtful suggestions. This Christmas is going to be tough because my uncle passed away and it is our first Christmas without him. My aunt, his widow, is still deeply mourning. My mother found his train set from when he was a little boy and on Christmas Eve we are going to stay up and put it around the Christmas tree to surprise my aunt with in the morning - so she knows a little bit of my uncle is still with us.

These suggestions are all so sweet.

Michelle - Thank-you so much, and good luck with your own move!
Luana - I'm so sorry to hear about your boyfriend's friend, but that's so sweet that he's helping her out that way. And buying presents for your baker? How cute!
Lauren - That's lovely, and plenty, as well. Well done! :)

This is really thoughtful. I think most people forget that it can be a hard time of year for so many people.
I don't do anything too special, but I always donate money at Xmas time to charity and get rid of all my old clothes and place them in the donation bins.

This is so true, sometimes we just think it's a given that Christmas is beautiful and magical for everyone. My boyfriend's friend's house burned down earlier this month, so her whole family were staying at a hotel. He has a house in Cardiff and since he's spending the holidays in London he's left them the house for the whole of the holidays so they can have Christmas there. As for me, I always get little somethings for neighbors and also the baker! The baker is really important in my life haha.
My holidays will involve a lot of studying unfortunately, but I will be celebrating Christmas eve with family of course.

How thoughtful! Yes, I sometimes think that people forget how stressful or upsetting the holidays can be. When you have bad memories around the time or (like us this year!) you're low on cash, it can be kind of rough!
Oh and good luck on moving! We're doing a rather short notice move (we knew we'd be moving, but we'd planned for end of Jan - just decided that the prices are better right now and we want out of this house ASAP) over the next couple of weeks, and it'll be stressful no doubt, but maaaan I'm excited :D
