Because I didn’t, but if you’d asked me that question a couple of hours ago, I possibly would have replied ‘’what? Of course I do!’’ and acted all ‘’jeez, can you believe this person?’’-y and silly and then you would’ve pointed out that actually, I was very, very wrong and also, to hey, DROP the attitude.
But on a more serious note, inspired by Miss Peregrin’s thoroughly interesting read ‘What’s Really In Your Wardrobe?’, I decided to conduct a stock-take on my own belongings this evening and holy headbands, what an eye-opening experience that was!
Firstly, I am a culler. An APPALLING culler. So appalling, in fact, that one of my best friends once insisted that the next time I decided to go on a discarding frenzy, I call her immediately. (It's likely that this is because she wanted to save one of her favourite dresses to borrow from an unfortunate fate, but anyway!) I’m a big believer in the twelve month rule (that is, if you haven’t worn something in over twelve months, it’s definitely time that it was hauled out), and as such, am VERY good friends with my local charity bin. (Honestly, just ask her; her name’s Betty, and we go way back!)
With this knowledge, I was sure that I wouldn’t be too surprised about what was tucked away in my wardrobe when I pulled everything out and counted it all, and I certainly didn’t expect to walk away feeling the teeniest bit shameful; but boy, was I wrong: I did. BIG time! It turns out that I actually own a LOT more than I thought I did, and it turns out that there was also a whole bunch of other stuff that I didn’t know, either:

x I own 22 sleeveless tops, 5 pairs of jeans, 4 skirts, two pairs of pants, 10 t-shirts, 14 jackets, 10 jumpers, 16 blouses/long-sleeved tops, 10 cardigans, 4 shirts, 24 pairs of shoes, 6 handbags, 6 clutches and 54 dresses. (And remember, I am a CULLER! I considered this to be a CONSERVATIVE amount of items! Oh, and this isn’t even including the draws full of pajamas, tracksuit pants and other assorted attractive *cough* bed/leisure/slumming-it wear that I own!) Right. So that’s why I have three wardrobes (and still no space), then!
x I seem to be in complete denial about the fact that I live in Australia. Honestly, I would estimate that 70% of my wardrobe’s contents are Winter orientated and yes, while I AM originally from New Zealand, where it is much, much, cooler, I moved here 10 years ago!
x When I stand in front of my mirror wailing ‘’I have nothing to wear!’’ like a three year old on a Saturday night and my boyfriend assures me that yes, I really do, he’s PROBABLY correct.
x In addition to buying with the mindset that I live in Antarctica, I also seem to spend with the belief that I’m regularly attending all manners of extravagant formal occassions and themed soirees`! For example:
I bought this dress thinking ‘’wow, wouldn’t this be GREAT to wear to a 70’s party?!’’ That was two years ago, and I haven’t attended a single 70’s party since. Actually, I don’t think I’ve EVER attended a 70’s party! (Oh, wait. That’s a lie. I did in 2004 and dressed as Mrs. Alice Cooper. Good times!) But I digress: it’s one of the many almost costume-like/extremely inappropriate items that I’ve never worn and can’t really say that I can see making an appearance any time soon! (Unless any of you are planning on having a 70’s party sometime soon. Won’t somebody PLEASE have a 70’s party sometime soon?!)
x That I’m going to be a lot more attentive towards what I spend my clams on from now on. In fact, I MAY just bring this list with me next time I'm shopping, so as to ensure that I don’t end up with another 20 fringed dresses/ball gowns. (And I wonder why I find it so difficult to put an outfit together for the office. JEEZ!)
♥
What would you learn from examining the contents of your wardrobe? What shopping trends would emerge? Would you discover that you don’t need 350 pairs of snakeskin pants, or that now that you think about it, 350 isn’t enough? Would you think twice about what you buy? I'm certainly going to!
xoxo

So, I haven't done this with my entire wardrobe (yet), but I did count my legwear recently. I had 8 pairs of leggings, 19 pairs of tights, and 25 pairs of non-athletic (e.g. knee-high, thigh-high, otherwise meant to be exposed) socks.
I have an issue. I don't know if I want to correct it.

I used to have like 20 pairs of jeans, 50 pairs of shoes and a lot of stuff that I really didn't use.
On December I cut down my wardrobe to less than half it's size. I kept many shoes, 7 jeans, 5 dresses, 5 jackets, a lot of black white & gray tops and like 4 skirts.
I'm going to make another cut and really keep what I really do wear and love. Also, I can't stand clutter.

And of course, the sequins are there :)

Whenever I do outfit planning, I end up inventorying my wardrobe, and I find it to be very helpful. Mostly because I can forget the resources I have on hand! But I'm not a culler, like you, lady. I'm a keeper - I love having options, so I hang onto things until I'm SURE they no longer suit my body or style.

I'm with you on denial of living in Oz. I'm all up with the winter stylin' too :D Love it.

Joanne Faith - The weirdest thing is that it SEEMS like a lot of dresses, but I would never, ever have guessed that there were that many in there! Bizarre! And oh, yes, I know that feeling! My boyfriend probably takes up an 1/8 of the wardrobe space we have, but sometimes that STILL seems like too much! ;D
Adele - Yay! And also, thank-you!
Sarah Hannah - Hahaha, LOVE it. Me too. Bunny ears and a sequined bow tie? I think I'm constantly dressing with the intention to attend imaginary dress-up parties. And also, ooh! I'm going to check out your post now!
Alex - Oh, no! Don't let that stop you! Do it anyway, I want to see, I want to SEE! And ha! I so should, although can you imagine the reactions?! Two of my best friends from high school and I once decided that we were going to have an evening where we dressed up in stuff that was WAY too fancy/insane for normal events and go out in it, just to be able to say that we'd worn those things that had been sitting in our wardrobes forever!

Ah, I've been wanting to do a post like this for ages but never got around to it, ha ha. Everyone will be like "You copied Frock & Roll and Miss Peregrin!!! ZOMGGGGG" Ahaha.
Good post, Corrine.
You should wear the 70's dress when we go shopping :P

I love, love, love this. Such a good idea. I can't believe how many dresses you own!
Going to do it now!

THAT IS A LOT OF DRESSES! I have not ever done a wardrobe stock take - although it might put things into perspective for me!
I do know that everything in there is for keeps, since moving in with my boyfriend I made a few hard & fast decisions about keeping or selling. ;)
