Blogger Outfit Voyeurism: What Makes YOU Tune In? ♥

in I Want... Style!, I Want... Blogging!

Whether they're 'What I Wore' posts or 'Hey, Look What I Threw On This Morning!' posts (okay, that's possibly a title from The Land Of Lies!) or, as they're labelled here, 'What The Frock?!' posts, it's inevitable that if you produce a blog or website with an orientation towards fashion or style, segments featuring your daily, weekly or even monthly wear will be common. And often? They're the most popular, too!

But why? What is it about viewing another person's sartorial choices online that makes for such compelling viewing? Is it because we use their pictures to influence our own personal attire? Do they fuel our inspiration for future purchases? Are we living vicariously through their bold daily style, or astounding collection of designer heels? Or is it simply because really, they're just a natural progression from the beloved real-life sport of people watching?

I'm not entirely sure, but I do know that they definitely ARE considered compelling viewing, and have been so for years. After all, there's a reason why websites such as The Sartorialist and Lookbook exist (and are phenomenally successful), dedicated to showcasing nothing more than what people are dressing themselves in each day. And despite the fact that appearance-wise, I often feel about as chic as a screaming chimpanzee, even here, they're (apparently!) one of things that people want to see: polls have told me. Previous surveys have told me. (And yes, I checked that there was more than one response, so I can't actually point the finger solely at my mother this time!) My website statistics tell me. And whether or not that's only because people are returning to exclaim ''good LORD, did you see the colour of the dress that she has on today? It's HIDEOUS!'' is anyone's guess, but it does appear that with most fashion/style based websites, a blogger + an outfit = quite the interesting little formula indeed.

But what intrigues YOU to them? Are you intrigued by them? And if you display your own wardrobe choices online, what motivates you to do so?

Personally? I love that although I might never have contemplated the excellence that could result from hammering thumb tacks through my shoes to create amazing Jeffery Campbell inspired wedges before, a la the likes of Annie Spandex, I will absolutely want to after seeing how incredible they look:

Annie Spandex, Thumb tack shoes

Or that after witnessing how ludicrously cute the humble Hallmark bow can be when worn as a shiny headband embellishment, I'll never look at supermarket objects the same way again! :

Gala Darling New York

But ultimately? I'm enchanted by the WORDS that accompany a photo. The story. The adventure! Forget being the most fashionable, the most professional or the most avant-garde; if a picture can tell me about what a person is doing, how they're doing it or even about where they are, I'm enthralled. And while that could be a symptom of an excessive case of nosiness, I also can't help but think that it's mostly due to the fact that despite what items a person is wearing, I will always be more interested in the person that's wearing them!

xoxo

i like outfit posts because of the words that accompany them too :]

sure, i find it interesting to see how other people style things & sometimes it inspires me to try some of those, but mostly it's reading about WHY they chose that particular outfit & what they did in it & how others reacted to it that intrigues me.

You can tell a lot about someone from the clothes they like to wear. I think we find bloggers online who we think are totally awesome and the kind of people we would LOVE to be friends with - or be like - in real life, and the outfit posts kind of fuel that whole "we're totally friends" thing. I think outfit posts are great. My favorites are Queen Michelles - since she tries to talk about why she styles something

For me, I think it's part of a more deep-seated obsession with clothes. I'm always the one saying to my boyfriend "Hey, you remember that girl we saw walking out of the Food Court today who had those amazing tie-dyed jeans? I want a pair just like that", while he stares at me like I'm a loony for remembering stuff like that. Daily outfit posts let me outfit-stalk people without being so creepy, LOL.

But also, I like to "get to know" the person behind the blog a little, and I think that people's outfits, and the words accompanying them tell you a lot about that person.

I feel so honored! Thank you so much--it's very encouraging :) xoxxx

People asked me to do more outfit posts. I am though I don't see the appeal as I normally don't wear anything very interesting...I guess they're just curious?

Daily wear blogs are inspiring, like everyone else has said, but it's more than that for me. I've only been reading fashion blogs for a few months, but I quickly became hooked because seeing what other fasionable women are wearing, with both similar and completely different styles than I, has helped me develope my personal style. Before I felt like I was just hovering on the edge figuring out who I am stylistically.

I've also re-discovered thrifting due to some extremely fasionable, frugal ladies. Years of Elle and Vogue left me feeling like I had to buy high and these bloggers have reminded me that the price tag doesn't make the fashion.

This is the first time I've read your blog - Sal of Always Pretty linked to you -and I'll stay tuned! Great questions, really made me think about why I read you guys.

Personally, I find outfit posts really inspiring, and just generally interesting.

Also, they make a blogger feel more real. Like, I can read all the reviews, and advice and opinions you want to write, but you only really get to know a blogger through their outfits.

I love outfit posts, but I think I must be nosy, too, because I love reading the text that accompanies them!

7 May 2010, leia, thehifashionsite.com

I'm in the same boat as many, I just get really inspired when I see what other people wear! Also, I have always been a bit too curious for my own good, and it's a good way to sneak a peak into people's lives! Haha, I shouldn't admit that :S

7 May 2010, Flit About, http://flit-about.blogspot.com

I just love seeing what other people wear and either getting inspiration or admiring their daring on trying something that I wouldn't!

Thalia Camille - Those are excellent, and interesting, points. Thank-you so much for sharing them! (And I'm sorry, I feel like I'm saying that to almost everyone today but gosh, everyone sure does raise some good issues/share some great thoughts!)

Sally - Agreed. And thanks, Sal!

Stace - Thank-you! :) And that's a wonderful thing to derive from them!

Julie - Ha, I've never even thought of doing that, but I like it! :D They CAN be a great way to kind of stocktake what you have/what works..

Anisha - Aw, but I'd love to see yours! You always look fantastic (and very stylishly clad) in your photographs!

Michelle - I think that's very true; I think we usually see a bit more of a writer/blogger's personality through them!

Lady Julianne - I agree, but at the same time, I'm fundamentally nosy AND a curious shopper, so I do also enjoy when people occasionally show some of their new purchases, too!

Belinda Jane - Haha, I'm not sure that I could be even if I tried! ;D But what is ''high fashion'', anyway? What do you consider that to be? A designer label? A pout? What? (Tell me, I'm intrigued!)

Not sure if this answers your question and I know others have said it but for me, normal people are way more appealing than seeing what someone out of the pages of Vogue or something is wearing. I'm not a size 4 so why would I find their shoots inspirational?? I can't afford the things they have in their mags and its the same reason I don't like blogs who promote $$$$$$$ fashion or seem too unrealistic either. Most of us aren't high fashion so its not appealing when blogs try to be and that's usually what makes me lose my interest in them. Don't ever be high fashion!!

6 May 2010, Belinda Jane

I agree that it's more inspiring for me to see real people wearing clothes than models.

I like more quirky, individual outfits. I'm not really drawn to people showing off new purchases or a current trend.

6 May 2010, Lady Julianne, http://ladyjulianne.blogspot.com/

I'm with you - I honestly am kind of baffled that outfit posts are so popular, because I'd rather see wordy posts than a ton of outfit photos with no details or explanation. But every time I do a survey or anything, more outfit posts are always requested! I guess it makes your readers feel more connected and makes you seem more down to earth, maybe?

6 May 2010, Michelle, http://www.wicked-whimsy.com

You know, if you'd asked me a year ago, I'd have told you that I didn't read fashion blogs and that I wasn't interested in how other people dress at all...

It has significantly changed over the year though; watching other people's style evolve gives me hope that the same is true for me and it gives me the confidence to try outfits that I generally wouldn't dare to wear around here!

I'm still apprehensive as far as posting my own outfits goes though!

6 May 2010, Anisha, http://livelifedeeply.net

I love getting inspiration from their outfits, in the specific case of Andy from StyleScrapbook I do get ideas from what I'm buying next (she wears a lot of Zara which is available here), I also like to see what they're doing and where they wore the outfit.

I personally post my outfits just to have a record of what I wore. That way when I cna't dress myself I look at my pictures and recycle outfits.

6 May 2010, Julie, http://juliettemaxwell.com

I love that last line.

My interest is totally inspiration based, for shopping and working out what to wear each day!

5 May 2010, Stace

Great question, lady! I find outfit posts totally inspiring, and get more ideas for how I'd like to dress myself by looking at blogs than from any other source. It's great to see a variety of women - in all heights, weights, and shapes - wearing clothes they love in creative, fun ways.

5 May 2010, Sally, http://www.alreadypretty.com/

For me it is mostly the inspiration factor. I think it's important to note that unlike runway photos or pictures in fashion magazines, many bloggers are more like "real" people. You can look at a "WIW" post and think "I could totally wear that to work like she is," or "I had no idea *insert store that actually falls within budget* had cool stuff like that!"

Now that I think of it, as a blog gets more popular and more sleek, I become disinterested in that kind of post - the author is now wealthy and has some pro photographer to take these photos - they are no longer relateable.

5 May 2010, Thalia Camille, http://thaliacamille.blogspot.com/

Louise - Those are interesting points - I wonder if we kind of feel more connected to a blogger/writer by knowing what they look like?

Bec - They are! Annie is a clever girl. I'm on the hunt for a pair of black wedges so that I can whip up my own!

5 May 2010, x Corrine/Frock & Roll x, www.frockandrollonline.com

Whoa those wedges are amazing!!!

5 May 2010, Bec

I think it's a combination of everything that you've said. I like to be inspired but I also like to know more about the blogger, because sometimes you might not see a particular side of them in their writing that you do when they're wearing a certain kind of outfit. It's nice to know what people look like, too :)

5 May 2010, Louise

Alex - You should definitely start doing them! I have ALWAYS thought that you should start doing them! You have such a good eye for clothing and I know that on days where 95% of us absolutely couldn't be assed for dressing up in TAFE last year, you always looked SPECTACULAR. I would *love* to see you do 'What I Wore'/'What I'm Wearing'/'Wardrobe Remix'/'Look What Was On My Floor And NOT Dirty' photos! :D

xoxo

5 May 2010, x Corrine/Frock & Roll x, www.frockandrollonline.com

I'm not sure really, I think I look at 'What I wore' posts for inspiration. I like seeing other people's trends and style :)

When I did a survey a little while ago asking people what type of posts they wanted to see, 100% of people said 'What I wore' posts. Ahh, maybe I should start doing them..
