Addictive! INTRIGUING! What Makes A Compelling Website? ♥

Oh, you know the ones!

It's the websites that are so friendly with your computer that heck, they're practically on a first name basis. (''Why hey there, Ebay!'' ''Oh HI, Macbook!'')

The websites that you find yourself constantly sneaking a glance at. (Work? What work?!)

The content that's so ludicrously addictive, whether because of its striking photographs of Sweden or deliciously witty pieces on suitcases (or, um, neither!), that you're often surreptitiously typing in the address of the website in your internet address bar whenever you're online, REGARDLESS of whether your Twitter/Facebook/Google Reader account has alerted you to the fact that there's a new piece available. And why? Because they're just so gosh darn marvellous! They're compelling, and day after day, that's precisely what has us clicking over to visit them again and again.

So, what exactly makes compelling, so-good-that-you-memorise-their-website-address-and-visit-it-even-when-they-haven't-posted-something-new content? Let's examine!

An Interesting Story

Gala Darling, Gala Darling Blog

With her delightful arsenal of self-help articles and sublime neon-coloured hair, blogger Gala Darling was already ripe for the compelling content picking, but her enchanting fairytale of quitting the corporate world at age 23 has ensured that she's succeeded in making it happen!

Ditching the office cubicle forever in favour of carving her own path and earning her income through her website of the same name, Gala has a story that's captivating, has been spread through the mouths of thousands and has garnered interest worldwide: ''she earns money from blogging!'' People tell. ''I want to earn money from blogging!'' Others think. ''How does she do it?!'' Hello, addictive reading! People flock to her website searching for the answers and enjoy her flamboyant, fabulous style and relentlessly positive approach while they're there; and thus, a compelling content star is born!

Expertise

Perhaps they're a crafting expert who can show you how to make a pillowcase from a DVD player or a style maven who's mastered 17,5566 ways to tie a scarf - either way, they're so knowledgeable about a particular area or subject that you just have to frequent their page to see what they're devising next! Jane Aldridge of Sea Of Shoes' love of fashion and flair for concocting brilliant outfits has commanded her serious attention as a style expert, while Nubby Twiglet's passion for art and experience has earned her respect as an extremely talented graphic design authority. Addictive? Indeed. Intriguing? You bet!

A Unique Writing Style

Politics, schmolitics, garbage cans, schmarbage cans: there are some writers who can take ANY topic and run with it, simply because of their unique writing style and ability to entertain, inform or interest!

Consistent, Frequent Updates

Now, while a website that's consistently and frequently updated a few times a day may not appeal to everyone, for some it's the pinnacle of viewing excellence: they like to know that they can whack the address of a particular website onto their computer and see that the page has had two new pieces added to it since their last visit!

For example? Perez Hilton's infamous celebrity gossip website. Sure, you may wish that he'd give Kristen Stewart a break sometimes and may not agree with his snarky commentary 99.9% of the time, but you do know that regardless of what time you land upon his page, within an hour or so there'll be something new to read, making it all the more compelling to repeatedly return!

An interesting tale? Expertise or knowledge on a certain subject or area? A unique writing style? Recipes for gargoyles?! What makes YOUR favourite website compelling, and if you're a blogger, what could you do to follow their lead or create something even more irresistable?

xoxo

I love it when people are really passionate about what they choose to blog about. It really shows. Sites like Gala Darling, Nubby Twiglet and Frock and Roll Online :).

Although, I respect privacy, I really love blogs/sites that are personal &/or come across as personal. Where they post of photos of themselves & talk about things to do with them and their personal views and you feel that is really their view!

I like feeling connected to the person.

Also; I adore all three people you spoke about here! ♥

I like sites where the bloggers post photos of themselves! I like to know a bit about them.. I know they lose their privacy but that’s what keeps me visiting… x

I hadn't thought much about those before, but they all make so much sense! I will definitely be bookmarking this page for future reference.

Personally, I like a blog that has a good balance of pictures and text, and has consistently good quality writing.

I never thought about "the interesting story" part--but it's so true. People who are absolute CHARACTERS themselves always intrigue me. I like Gala because she is just so different from anyone I've ever seen (in good or bad ways, I can't say. But interesting nonetheless!)

Blogs with wonderful photography keep me coming back as well. I get so bored with too much text (even though I am a little long winded myself). If I actually VISIT the site & not just look at in my Reader, it means I love it--and it should have a nice looking layout. the first time I visit, a nice layout will keep me there or push me away.

My favourite blog is Sarah Wilson's (www.sarahwilson.com.au) - it's my homepage! She updates almost everyday and her writing is so refreshing and inspiring.

I am attracted to blogs with consistent, quality content and an authentic voice. I tend to stick to one per category (or I would never leave the computer)... Garance Dore for fashion, Primped (mainly Zoe) for beauty, Wordsmith Lane for writing. And I have just discovered this one - for all of those, and more :)

I think a unique writing style is what does it for me. Coupled with subject-matter that really interests me, and you have a winner in my book.

Enthusiasm is another big one, though; I love to see the writer show enthusiasm about the subject that they're writing about - it always translates via the written word to the reader. :)

I think that another part of compelling websites are the way they present their content.

Breaking down posts with pictures of dividers, highlighting points in different colours of font weights, custom headers for each posts, just to name a few things. Even custom bullet points make a difference.

The content is important but if it is all one HUGE paragraph with no pictures, no spaces and nothing; chances are that people will say "Too long, I won't read it".

For example, Nubby uses dividers, pictures, custom headers to break down the contents of her blog posts when she is answering a question to her readers. Gala just started using titles within the posts, her pictures are bigger and she uses page breaks to break it all down. Her posts were fine before but without those things, they did feel very long.

The websites I like deviate from what I know about. I like fashion and inspiration blogs but my expertise lies on computers, networks, websites and what makes them tick.

I kind of like websites that just don't focus on one subject. I like reading about people's opinions on a variety of things, you know, just as it would happen if you went out for a coffee with them and got to talk. You wouldn't just stay on one subject (most of the time anyway), right?

The blogs that I like are fun and bright and the people on them are intriguing individuals. I admire them for different reasons though :) I follow a few people for fashion reasons and then others for social awareness issues that im interested in.

With my own blog I just try to be myself, hopefully thats enticing enough, but who knows! lol

Great points. I'm currently going by the theory of 'write the content and they will come'. I find I write best when I'm not forcing myself, when I'm just writing exactly what I think, even if it's nonsense about mice. I like to think my posts are somewhat humorous!

My area of expertise is vague... basically I'm good with general life lessons, minimalism, living poor, and travelling. And whatever other crap is going on in my life.

My favourite blogs are consistently interesting and aren't just pages and pages worth of photos all the time because that really annoys me!

Kathryn - Me too, 100%!

I think the websites I like have a personal element to them. Eg. if I go on a fashion blog and it's all photos from Vogue with "I want this" type captions, couldn't care less, but if someone is showing how they styled their latest op shop find = love it.

Also madly in love with Ikea Hacket atm. Brilliant.
